Armed standoff ends peacefully in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE – An armed man surrendered peacefully Monday afternoon after a tense 90 minutes in a neighborhood on the city’s northwest side.

Fort Wayne police confirmed that 39-year-old man was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation after the standoff that began shortly before 11 a.m.

Police were called to a home in the 1700 block of Wisteria Place in response to a report that there was a suicidal person with a gun who had barricaded himself inside.

Before officers arrived, family members inside the home fled to safety. Two adjacent homes were evacuated as the police Emergency Services Team and Crisis Response Team responded to the scene, as well as the department's armored vehicle.

Several unsuccessful attempts were made before police were able to contact the suspect by telephone, when he was reportedly preparing to surrender.

The man surrendered peacefully to the Emergency Services Team about an hour and a half after the ordeal began.

No injuries were reported at the scene. The man’s name was not released.
