MUNCIE – Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler has reopened two closed fire stations, keeping a promise he made in his successful campaign last fall.
The Mock Avenue fire station reopened Saturday after being closed by former Mayor Sharon McShurley in the spring of 2009 in a cost-cutting move.
The Star Press reported the city used the occasion to also officially reopen the McCulloch Park fire station that had closed last February because of flooding and mold-related problems in its basement.
The two stations serve Muncie’s east side.
Tyler is a former Muncie firefighter. He said the need to reopen the Mock Avenue station became apparent as he met with voters last year.
Muncie Fire Chief Eddie Bell says reopening the fire stations will improve response time, and that could save lives.
