A taste of life to come under climate change: Not so sweet
Global warming is hitting right where it hurts: the heart-shaped box of chocolates.
Americans may finally get worked up about climate change when they learn how it is threatening Valentines Day.
Some causes for concern:
? Chocolate will become more scarce and more expensive as temperatures increase and weather trends change. Research shows that rising temperatures in Ghana and the Ivory Coast – which produce more than half of the worlds cocoa – will very likely require farmers to change their crops.
? Sugar production in Indonesia declined 30 percent in 2011 because of climate change. The decline will raise sugar prices worldwide.
? Nut crops, such as peanuts and pecans, declined in the U.S. in 2011 because of weather. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported a 17 percent drop in peanut production and a 14 percent drop for pecans. The price for pecans went from $8.30 a pound in 2010 to $9.78 a pound in 2011.
