Police officer surrenders after standoff

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indianapolis police officer turned himself in to fellow officers at a city park after a four-hour Valentine’s Day standoff.

The Indianapolis Star reported that 54-year-old Officer Craig Ratcliff surrendered just after 1 p.m. and was seen getting into an ambulance, surrounded by other officers. He was carrying a small box of candy, a greeting card and a stuffed animal.

Police said he was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The incident is believed to have started from a domestic situation. Some area streets were closed and people were being diverted away from the park during the standoff.

WRTV-TV reported (http://bit.ly/wBKifr) that the officer was on duty when he became distraught and threatened to kill himself Tuesday morning following a conversation with his girlfriend and then went to Tarkington Park on the city's near-northside.

SWAT officers negotiated with the officer for several hours before he surrendered early Tuesday afternoon. Several streets in the area were cordoned off.
