NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Indiana officials said an Ohio River bridge closed in September after a crack was found in load-bearing steel could reopen about a week early.
The Indiana Department of Transportation said Tuesday that if weather cooperates the Sherman-Minton Bridge linking Louisville, Ky., and New Albany may reopen about a week ahead of the contractor’s March 1 deadline.
The Indiana agency said its estimate is based on the contractor’s progress in adding reinforcing steel to the span that carries traffic along Interstate 64 between the states. Officials said an exact date of the bridge’s reopening isn’t yet known.
The bridge was closed Sept. 9 after a significant crack was discovered in a load-carrying steel beam on the bridge. Crews began adding reinforcing steel to the span in early November.
