A raucous throng of protesters descended on the Indiana Statehouse today.
Angry labor union representatives still enraged by the right to work law?
Nope – about 1,000 students and parents pushing for more school choice.
"Kevin Chavous, a co-founder and chairman of Democrats for Education Reform and the Black Alliance for Educational Options, hosted the event and fired up the crowd by suggesting they 'get this party started,' writes Greg Margason at Franklin College's Statehouse File, "The kids responded. They became so loud in fact, that many of the speakers had to employ different techniques to quiet them. Gov. Mitch Daniels even tried shushing, to no avail."
According to the report, Daniels cited measures he and the General Assembly have approved to expand school choice, including the voucher program, changes to school funding that allow families to attend public schools outside their home district, charter school expansion and new restrictions on collective bargaining for teachers.
Two thoughts on the Statehouse crowd: 1) Good thing the occupancy limit intended to stifle right to work protest was lifted. 2) What would be the response from the governor and others if students from traditional public schools swarmed the Statehouse to call for more funding?
My guess is that there would be questions raised about why the students weren't back in their classrooms, along with accusations that they were being used as pawns by selfish adults. Don't hold your breath waiting for an elected official to raise any questions over today's rally.
