Animal shelter wins investigative grant

Fort Wayne has won an $8,000 grant to help pay for crime scene investigation tools that will be used in animal cruelty cases.

Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control was one of five agencies in the country awarded the grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the city announced.

The items purchased with the grant money include crime scene photography scales, blood detection equipment, laser measuring devices and a cadaver storage refrigerator.

In 2011, Animal Care & Control officers responded to more than 22,000 calls for service. Of those calls, more than 6,000 were investigations that included concerns about cruelty, neglect or animal bites.
