7 area caddies earn Evans scholarships

Seven of the nine high school caddies who were awarded the Western Golf Association’s Chick Evans Scholarship are from the Fort Wayne area.

The area recipients are Emily Diffendarfer (Bishop Dwenger), Alexander MacDonald (Bishop Dwenger), Margaret Fritz (Concordia), Addisen LaCroix (Concordia), Michaela O’Shaughnessey (Bishop Luers), Joshua Wilkinson (Whitko) and Melissa Mailand (home-school in Hoagland).

WGA directors and Evans Scholars alumni interviewed each recipient at a selection meeting Feb. 1 at Crooked Stick Golf Course in Carmel. The full college tuition and housing scholarship is valued at an estimated $17,500 annually and is renewable for up to four years.

IndyCar news

IndyCar officials will eliminate double-file restarts this season at three ovals – Indianapolis, Texas and Fontana. Double-file restarts will continue at IndyCar’s 12 other races. … The series will use heat races for qualifying at Iowa Speedway.

White Sox add former Cub

Kosuke Fukudome agreed to a one-year contract that guarantees $1 million with the Chicago White Sox. Fukodome joined the Cubs for the 2008 season with a $48 million, four-year contract.

Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn is undergoing surgery to remove a new cancerous tumor inside his right cheek. … Milwaukee reliever Jose Veras was awarded a $2 million salary in arbitration rather than his request for $2,375,000. …

A person familiar with the deal said manager Joe Maddon agreed to a three-year contract extension with Tampa Bay. … Kansas City exercised its option on manager Ned Yost to keep him with the club through the 2013.

2 Northrop athletes choose schools

Two Northrop athletes made their college choices. Tyler Rondot will be playing football for Trine, and Emma Mirwaldt, a cross country state finalist and member of the 2011 state championship girls track team, will run for Bowling Green.

Board: Suspension for lawyer

The Ohio Supreme Court’s Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline recommended a six-month license suspension for Christopher Cicero, the lawyer whose emails to former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel triggered a scandal that toppled the former coach.

Woods announces playing schedule

Tiger Woods announced on his website that he would play the Match Play Championship next week in Arizona, followed by the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and the Cadillac Championship at Doral.
