Ex charged in woman’s brutal slaying

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – The ex-husband of a Mishawaka woman whose body was found near the tobacco store where she worked has been charged with murder.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office says 37-year-old Joseph Wayer III of Goshen was arrested using DNA evidence from hair fibers that 33-year-old Barbara Sheppard had in her hand when she was found dead in an alley three days before Christmas. The murder occurred nine days after her divorce from Wayer was finalized.

Police say Sheppard died of massive sharp instrument injuries to her neck. Police say Wayer admitted to sending threatening messages to Sheppard over the Internet and said he was upset with her but had not seen her in months.

Wayer was being held without bond in the St. Joseph County Jail.
