Slumping Boilers fall to Penn State at home

– Maggie Lucas scored 28 points and No. 12 Penn State maintained its Big Ten lead by defeating No. 17 Purdue 74-63 Thursday night.

It was the fifth straight win for the Lions (21-5, 11-3), who have two home games left – against No. 9 Ohio State, which trails Penn State by a half game, and Minnesota – before the Big Ten tournament begins March 1 in Indianapolis.

Lucas scored 20 of her points in the second half, when Penn State pulled away from a 35-33 halftime lead.

Mia Nickson had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lions. Alex Bentley and Zhaque Gray added 10 points apiece.

Guyton had 12 points to lead Purdue (19-7, 9-4), which has lost four of its last five after an 11-game winning streak. Chantel Poston had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Boilermakers.

It was the only regular-season meeting between the schools.

No. 6 MIAMI 73, N.C. STATE 61: In Raleigh, N.C., Riquna Williams scored 17 of her 24 points in the first half and Shawnice Wilson added career highs with 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Hurricanes (23-3, 12-1 ACC). Myisha Goodwin-Coleman scored 14 points to lead N.C. State (15-12, 4-9).

ALABAMA 77, No. 7 KENTUCKY 75: In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Jasmine Robinson scored 17 points as the Crimson Tide earned its first win against a ranked team in more than nine years. The Tide (12-15, 2-11 SEC) had most of a 23-point lead wiped out in the second half before handing the league-leading Wildcats (21-5, 10-3) their third straight defeat.

No. 8 MARYLAND 73, VIRGINIA 56: In Charlottesville, Va., Tianna Hawkins scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Terrapins (22-4, 9-4 ACC) to a road victory over the Cavaliers (18-9, 6-7).

No. 9 OHIO STATE 75, INDIANA 54: In Columbus, Ohio, Tayler Hill scored 27 points and the Buckeyes never trailed in handing the Hoosiers their 13th straight loss, even with the Buckeyes playing without Big Ten scoring leader Samantha Prahalis. Ohio State (23-3, 10-3), which has won the last nine meetings with Indiana, stayed in a tie for the top spot in the Big Ten.

Aulani Sinclair had 23 points and Quaneisha McCurty 11 for the Hoosiers (5-21, 0-13).

No. 10 DELAWARE 89, HOFSTRA 79: In Hempstead, N.Y., Elena Delle Donne had a season-high 42 points, including the 2,000th of her career, 14 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Blue Hens (23-1, 14-0 Colonial) past Hofstra (17-8, 9-5).

No. 11 GREEN BAY 90, CLEVELAND STATE 59: In Cleveland, Julie Wojta scored 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out five assists for the Phoenix. Lydia Bauer had 16 points, Adrian Ritchie 14 and Megan Lukan 12 for Green Bay (22-1, 12-1 Horizon). Green Bay outscored the Vikings (9-16, 4-10) 50-28 in the second half.

No. 18 GEORGIA 61, No. 25 SOUTH CAROLINA 59: In Columbia, S.C., Anne Marie Armstrong sank two foul shots with 5 seconds left to lead the Bulldogs (20-6, 9-4 SEC) past the Gamecocks (19-7, 8-5).

No. 20 GEORGIA TECH 67, WAKE FOREST 52: In Winston Salem, N.C., Dawnn Maye had 23 points and Tyaunna Marshall tallied a double-double to lead the Yellow Jackets (19-7, 9-4 ACC). Boykin Lakevia scored 16 points to lead the Demon Deacons (15-11, 5-8).

NORTHERN ILLINOIS 58, BALL STATE 44: In DeKalb, Ill., the Cardinals were outscored 34-19 in the first half of the Mid-American Conference loss. Ball State (8-17, 3-9 MAC) got 13 points from Brandy Woody. Northern Illinois improved to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
