Robbie Hummel had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Purdue in a 76-62 loss to No. 7 Michigan State Sunday at Mackey Arena. Here are the highlights.
Key number: 1 of 23. The Boilermakers went 1 of 23 to start the second half. The team led by three at halftime, but the cold shooting spelled doom.
Key sequence: A sequence that summed up the struggles came without about 10 minutes left in the game. Terone Johnson missed a three-pointer. The Boilermakers got the rebound, but Johnson missed a layup. Tips by Hummel and Jacob Lawson didn't go in. Michigan State got the rebound and finished with a breakaway dunk by Branden Dawson.
Local connection: Blackhawk Christian graduate Russell Byrd played one minute for the Spartans. He came into Sunday averaging 1.5 points and 0.8 rebounds in 6.4 minutes.
"The one thing you try to do is educate your players. … I think D.J. Byrd is a great kid. He made a mistake and hopefully he learns from it. I think he will. When something happens and you have to part ways with guys, it doesn't make you feel good. It doesn't, because in a way I failed also. You try to teach people. That's our job, that's what we do. But you wish them well and hope things work out. If this decision helps him in life, than so be it."
- Purdue coach Matt Painter on the suspension of D.J. Byrd and the dismissal of Kelsey Barlow for violation of team rules.
