I don't know whether Michael Andretti is the guy shouting "All aboarrrd!" for the Wishful Thinking Limited, or a man wiser than we all know.
This after Andretti opined that IndyCar racing might actually be better off in the long run now that its meal ticket, Danica Patrick, has fled open-wheel rocket ships for NASCAR's taxicabs.
Call me crazy, but I'm leaning toward the "wiser" option.
See, Andretti is dead on when he says the problem with making Danica the poster child for IndyCar was that she was such a great poster child she tended to obscure the sport itself. The product got lost in the glare of its own sale pitch -- and it didn't help that the sales pitch was built around a driver who, while better than she's ever been given credit for, won just one race in the time she was IndyCar's billboard.
Maybe now, Andretti says, the sport itself -- and it remains, for my money, the best form of motorsports in America -- will emerge from the shadows.
I hope he's right. Because it deserves its own billboard.
