INDIANAPOLIS – Courtney Boylan scored 17 points to lead seventh-seeded Michigan past 10th-seeded Illinois 68-53 Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten women’s tournament.
Kate Thompson hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points for the Wolverines (20-10), who will face second-seeded Ohio State in the quarterfinals Friday. Rachel Sheffer added 12 points.
Karimsa Penn scored 10 points, and had game highs of 11 rebounds and three blocks for the Illini (11-19). Adrienne GodBold scored 12 points and Lydia McCully 10.
Michigan, which never trailed, shot 48 percent (23 of 48).
Two free throws by Nicole Elmblad gave the Wolverines their first double-digit lead at 20-10 with 7:24 left in the first half. They led 29-16 at the break.
The closest Illinois came in the second half was eight points. The lead peaked at 19.
Michigan gained revenge for last season, when last-seeded Illinois upset the Wolverines in the quarterfinals.
