Notre Dame guard Skylar Diggins lived up to preseason predictions.
The 5-foot-9 junior was named the Big East player of the year Friday.
She was the preseason player of the year after leading the Irish to the NCAA tournament championship game last season.
Diggins averaged 17.4 points and 5.8 assists this season and led the team with 77 steals.
Diggins was one of two unanimous All-Big East first-team selections Thursday.
The No. 3 Irish (27-2, 15-1) won their first outright regular-season conference title this season. Notre Dame is the No. 1 seed in the Big East tournament, which began Friday, and plays either DePaul or South Florida at 2 p.m. Sunday in Hartford, Conn.
DePaul and South Florida play at 2:20 p.m. today.
Freshman forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis was named the freshman of the year a day after being named the sixth man of the year.
She is the first player to collect both conference awards since the sixth man honor started in the 2007-08 season.
St. John's Kim Barnes was named the coach of the year. The Red Storm went 13-3 in the Big East and 21-8 overall and earned the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
