NRA backs Mourdock

The National Rifle Association appears ready to endorse Richard Mourdock for the Senate seat held by Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.

Mourdock’s campaign said Tuesday that it will have a Wednesday morning telephone news conference featuring Chris Cox of the NRA for the purpose of a “key endorsement announcement.” Cox is the NRA’s chief lobbyist.

“Dick Lugar is the single most anti-gun Republican in the U.S. Senate,” NRA President David Keene told the Weekly Standard for a story published this week.

Mourdock, the second-term state treasurer who is challenging Lugar in the May 8 Republican primary election, was endorsed nearly a year ago by the Gun Owners of America.
