FORT WAYNE – This is not the way the Komets wanted to go into this weekends back-to-back showdown with Evansville.
The Dayton Gems scored three goals on five shots in the second period and went on to down the Komets 4-3 Tuesday in Dayton.
Matthew Larke scored twice and Damian Surma once in the second on Gerry Festa, who manned the Komets nets as Nick Boucher sat out the game with an illness.
The three-goal burst gave the Gems (25-25-12) a 4-0 lead with less than five minutes to play in the second period and set up a Komets comeback that just fell short.
Jamie Milam got it started with a power play goal at 18:33 of the second. Stephon Thorne scored at 12:19 of the third and Jean-Michel Rizk at 13:35, but the Komets (36-18-4) couldnt get the equalizer despite outshooting Dayton 17-9 in the third period and 35-27 for the game.
Brandon Naurato gave the Gems a 1-0 lead after a period with a goal at 7:46 of the first.
