WEST LAFAYETTE - So there we were, a dozen or so media types, sitting in front of Purdue coach Matt Painter and scribbling like mad as he talked in generalities about his team playing Saint Mary's in the NCAA tournament Friday.
And Painter talks about going to Omaha; that he's been there before when he was an assistant and head coach at Southern Illinois.
"It's the Qwest Center, right?" he says.
And like an idiot, I correct him and say it's now called the CenturyLink Center.
And like the coach, he disagreed.
"No, it's the Qwest Center. I got that one right. I'm just making sure, man. As a coach, you're in your own world. You're just worried about getting a rebound."
His deal lasted about 15 minutes, then it was time to visit with the players. About four of them were waiting for us, lounging in the first row of chairs inside Mackey Arena. It was kind of like Super Bowl media day, except on a much, much, much smaller scale.
There wasn't a whole lot said, at least from the guys I talked with, who were Robbie Hummel, D.J. Byrd and Terone Johnson. Nobody ruffled any Saint Mary's feathers.
Got a couple videos to go with all this, so check 'em out.
I'll be popping in on anything and everything Purdue.
