The Kalamazoo Wings, proud member of the ECHL, two-time defending North Division Champions, reigning Eastern Conference Champions and National Hockey League affiliate to the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils and American Hockey League's Albany Devils, announce that first-ever player and captain in K-Wings history Al Genovy passed away last Saturday.
A pillar in the southwest Michigan community since coming to the area to play for the K-Wings in 1974, Genovy was honored back in December by the organization by having a new Ambassador Award named in his honor.
Genovy played for the K-Wings from 1974-78 and also served as an assistant coach for the team from 1974-76.
The Al Genovy Ambassador Award will honor and celebrate his lifelong accomplishments on and off the ice as an ambassador in every sense of the word.
As team captain, he helped lay the foundation making K-Wings hockey an integral part of the community.
After retiring from the K-Wings in 1978, Al went on to lead the way growing the sport of hockey throughout the region.
During last Saturday's game, the organization had a moment of silence for Genovy and for the rest of the season; the team will be donning AG 9 stickers on their helmets in his honor.
The K-Wings organization would like to send out their thoughts and prayers to the entire Genovy family. Genovy will be laid to rest this Thursday.
