As previously reported, Artem Podshendyalov and the Komets have parted ways. The decision to leave was made by Podshendyalov and his wife, who are expecting a child. From what I've heard, he will play in the Kontinental Hockey League.
The Komets were already planning on bringing in Mike Vaskivuo before Podshendyalov informed him of his plans.
So are the Komets better or worse now?
"It's hard to compare apples and apples or apples and oranges," general manager David Franke said. "If you look at Vaskivuo's stats, he had 26 goals last season in Dayton and 25 the season before, so he's obviously skilled. We're definitely going to get better defensively with him in the lineup. Will he be as exciting and explosive offensively? We'll just have to see."
I honestly think the Komets are a better team now. Look, I loved watching aPod, as we all did, but even his teammates didn't know what he was going to do and you could tell they were frustrated with him at times. There's a reason he was on a line with Colin Chaulk -- they needed someone strong-willed and good defensively to play alongside him.
That said, he's truly a talented and exciting player.
