OK, if there's anything I've learned in 15 years covering the Komets, it's that the fans will never like the referees or the coach.
I don't really get the latter.
Look at this poll on Ice Chips, where only 20.2 percent of voters have said they want Al Sims back regardless of which league the Komets play in next season.
I get the 24.5 percent that said they love Sims but wouldn't in the ECHL, considering those players will be much younger and there will be a huge emphasis on teaching and making sure they improve.
But, still, I'm surprised how low his approval rating seems on that poll and around the concourse. Actually, I guess I shouldn't be.
Fort Wayne fans always loathed Greg Puhalski too much. That was little more understandable because his teams' styles of play weren't always the most exciting, but he was the second-winningest coach in team history, won a championship and got them to the playoffs in five of six seasons.
Forgetting for a moment about Sims' first stint as coach with the Komets, in the past five seasons, he's won three championships, gotten to the conference semifinals with a team last year that was underwhelming as much because of management as coaching, and he's got the Komets on top of the Turner Conference today.
Add onto it his time with the Komets from 1989 to 1993, he's won four Cups and is the winningest coach in franchise history.
So, someone explain to me, comprehensively and rationally, why you don't like Sims. I'd love to hear it. It sure seems to be, barring a huge collapse in the next couple of weeks, he deserves to be here next season.
