Kimmel to emcee Emmys

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel just got a prime-time gig: Host of the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The star and executive producer of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will lead the Emmy Awards ceremony on Sept. 23 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

This is Kimmel’s first time headlining the Emmys, which air on ABC this year.

Kimmel’s namesake show is in its 10th season on ABC. He previously hosted the American Music Awards and the ESPY Awards and will be the host at the White House Correspondents’ dinner next month.

‘Mad Men’ record

Absence made the heart grow fonder for “Mad Men” fans, who flocked to the fifth-season premiere in record numbers.

AMC network says Sunday’s premiere telecast drew 3.5 million viewers. This marks a 21 percent growth over Season 4’s premiere. AMC said Monday that the cumulative audience for the night’s two airings of the debut episode was 4.4 million viewers.

The audience had been waiting for 17 months after “Mad Men” last aired in October 2010.

The much-acclaimed drama stars Jon Hamm.

Brown arrested

Officials in Southern California say Bobby Brown has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Harris says Brown was arrested about 12:20 p.m. Monday in the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles. He failed a field sobriety test and was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Harris says an officer initially pulled over the R&B singer after seeing him talking on his cellphone without a hand-free unit. Harris says the officer observed that Brown appeared to be impaired.
