Budget proposal supports Air Guard bases

The federal budget proposed by the Republican majority in the House contains a paragraph supporting Air National Guard bases, including the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne.

Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd, offered the provision, which states that the Guard “remains a critical component of our national air defense system. This budget recognizes the relative cost-effectiveness of the Air Guard, which currently provides 35 percent of the U.S. Air Force’s capability for 6 percent of the budget.”

Stutzman is a member of the House Budget Committee. His provision in the fiscal 2013 budget proposal says the panel “takes a continuing interest in ensuring that precipitous defense spending reductions do not jeopardize the nation’s security.”

The Air Force has proposed $50 billion in spending cuts, including trimming the ranks of the Air National Guard by 5,100 airmen. The Fort Wayne base would lose 152 jobs under the plan, which would replace about 20 combat jets at the base with half as many surveillance planes.
