Author of Lugar book to speak

John T. Shaw, author of "Richard G. Lugar, Statesman of the Senate," will speak and sign copies of his new book Monday in Indianapolis.

The program will be at 7 p.m. in the Cook Theatre at the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 N. Central Ave. The program is free and open to the public.

Shaw's appearance is co-sponsored by Howey Politics Indiana and Bookmamas.

Lugar, R-Ind., is being challenged in the May 8 Republican primary election by state Treasurer Richard Mourdock. The winner will face Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-2nd, in the November general election.

"As Senator Lugar enters his toughest election battle in years," Shaw examines his "approach to lawmaking and diplomacy for what it reveals about the workings of the Senate and changes in that institution," according to publisher Indiana University Press.

Lugar is a former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and is currently its ranking Republican.

Shaw has covered Congress since 1991 for Market News International and Washington Diplomat magazine. He also has been a commentator for C-SPAN and National Public Radio.

C-SPAN's BookTV will provide coverage of Monday's program. As of noon Wednesday, no date or time for the broadcast was listed on C-SPAN's schedule.
