Coroner identifies man pulled from St. Marys River

Authorities have identified a man whose body was found floating in the St. Marys River near the Wells Street footbridge.

Gary E. Brant, 40, drowned accidentally, according to the Allen County Coroner's Office.

Fort Wayne police said a fisherman found Brant's body in the river shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday near the 400 block of Wells Street.

City firefighters used a boat to retrieve the body, authorities said.

Conservation Officer Kenny Wireman said Brant was homeless and had been staying by the river.

"He was kind of living in the area there where he had a little camp," Wireman said. "He was in and out of the shelters."

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Fort Wayne Police Department and the coroner's office investigated Brant's death.
