Assistant Features Editor Kimberly Dupps Truesdell tries Piloxing at K’Monique’s Dance Studio in Covington Plaza.

I tried it

I had punched. I had plied. I had sweat through my shirt.

And that was just the warm-up.

Piloxing is a high-energy class that combines elements of boxing, Pilates, dance and traditional aerobics. The music is loud and upbeat, and the moves are dynamic.

What to expect: If you are looking for a good workout, Piloxing is the class for you. I did not stop moving for the entire hour when I attended a Friday morning class. Unlike Zumba and circuit-style classes I have taken, there is no obvious break to get water or catch your breath.

There’s also no pausing to explain a move. Jill Heath, the instructor, does a good job of shouting out what you should be doing but that only works if you know the terminology. Someone unfamiliar with a jab might need to shuffle a bit to see what the instructor is doing and then begin. It could be overwhelming for a new exerciser.

What I thought: I thought I was in shape, but after an hour of Piloxing, I had myself reconsidering the thought. It was hard … but in a good way.

My only difficulty was keeping rhythm with some of the dance-like moves – something I have trouble with in most aerobic classes. At least this one was fun!
