A Fort Wayne police officer received a five-day suspension for sleeping while on duty, officials said, heightened discipline because it was his second suspension within the last two months.
Officer Gregory K Addison Jr. took a half-hour nap while he was supposed to be patrolling the city, officials said.
Police officials learned of the violation after Addison’s in-car camera recorded him sleeping, Chief Rusty York told the Board of Public Safety on Monday.
The suspension for not being alert on duty is usually one day off work without pay.
“Although he didn’t miss any calls, he was not alert on duty,” York said of Addison’s nap. “The five days shows progressive discipline. It was escalated due to the fact that he’s just had another offense.”
York told the board last month that Addison served a one-day suspension for improper conduct after he gave a personal business card to a female during a traffic stop.
