NM state police: Missing kayak group back safe

The Associated Press

New Mexico state police say two Fort Bliss soldiers and an El Paso woman reported overdue from a kayak trip in the Gila National Forest are all safe and sound.

Lt. Robert McDonald said Tuesday that Sgt. Nicholas Mummert was found late Monday as he was making his way back to his car.

McDonald says police were waiting at Turkey Creek junction in the Gila River around noon on Tuesday when Spc. Alton Weber and his fiancée, Angelica Gonzales, arrived.

He says no one was hurt and that Mummert told rescuers that the other two fell behind on the trip, so he went on ahead intending to pick them up Tuesday.

McDonald says no one in the group had been kayaking on the Gila River before and underestimated how long it would take them to go on a 30-mile trip.
