Statement issued Tuesday by the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne:
Fort Wayne – The Clarence A. & Josephine E. Biedenweg Physical Education Scholarship is now seeking applications from Fort Wayne Community School seniors that plan to attend an Indiana accredited four year college or university and major in Physical Education. One lucky recipient will receive a $20,000 - $26,000 award! (Selection is based on academic performance, financial need, and extracurricular activities.)
"We have had a difficult time finding qualified applicants as this is not a field that many young people are pursuing," remarked David Bennett, executive director of the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. "This is a great opportunity to help defray the cost of a college education for a young person pursuing this career."
Both Clarence and Josephine Biedenweg were long-time educators in the Fort Wayne Community Schools. In their estate plans, they made a provision to establish a scholarship which will last 40 years and which has specific guidelines. Bennett said, "We are trying to do everything we can to fulfill the donors' wishes and to give a young person the means to attain an education. We hope that by using a much different way of getting the word out, we might find qualified applicants."
To apply, the students should contact their guidance counselor at their school or Sharon Callender at 260-467-8810. The scholarship deadline is April 9.
