The TinCaps will go with experience on opening day.
Right-hander Cody Hebner will be the starting pitcher for Fort Waynes season opener against Lake County on Thursday at Parkview Field.
The 21-year-old was a fourth-round pick in 2011 out of Green River Community College.
Hes a little bit older than the rest of the guys, he played in college and most of the guys are at least one, some two or three years younger than him, TinCaps pitching coach Willie Blair said Monday. And he earned it. He pitched really well in the spring.
Hebner went 2-2 with a 3.35 ERA last year for San Diegos short-season A team in Eugene, Ore.
Frank Garces, Adys Portillo, Joe Ross and Matthew Wisler round out the rotation.
Portillo is 20. Wisler is 19 and Ross is 18. Garces is 22, but he did not play in the minors in 2010 and spent last year with the Dominican Summer League Padres.
Fort Waynes piggy-back pitchers (guys who will pitch every four days to stay on a routine) are Justin Hancock and Michael Kelly. Hancock is 21 and Kelly is 19.
Daniel Sarria is the closer to begin the season.
He has unbelievable command with his off-speed pitches, Blair said. And can throw his changeup and curve at any time at any count. We felt that would be a good contrast to follow some of these power arms that we have.
Autograph event set for Wednesday
The TinCaps will hold an open practice about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Fans can meet the team and get autographs from players and coaches on the concourse after the practice.
