Pair charged in bad check, return scheme

Two Fort Wayne women are accused of writing bad checks for merchandise and then returning some of the items for cash refunds.

Sheila M. Donaldson, 23, and Stacy J. Sharp, 46, both of the 2100 block of St. Marys Avenue, were charged with corrupt business influence and theft Tuesday in Allen Superior Court.

Over a two-week period in December, the pair went to Kroger 11 times and paid with checks they knew weren’t valid and then returned some of the merchandise for cash or a gift card refund, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Court records said they stole $1,381.22 in merchandise that they did not pay for or received from the fraudulent returns.

Donaldson and Sharp would take turns writing the bad checks and returning the merchandise but would always use Sharp’s Kroger rewards card, court records said.

The two were not in police custody as of Tuesday evening.
