SOUTH BEND – Michael Floyd got a little help from his friend during Notre Dames Pro Day.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound receiver caught passes Tuesday from former Irish and current Carolina Panthers quarterback Jimmy Clausen.
It was my decision, Floyd said of having the quarterback that connected with him for 92 completions for 1,514 yards and 16 touchdowns in two seasons throw to him.
Hes a good friend, and I know he would help me out. Thats what he did today.
Floyd is expected to be taken in the first round of the NFL draft, which is April 26-28.
If you take the off-the-field stuff away from Michael Floyd and just watch the tape, I think he compares very favorably to Justin Blackmon, said NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock, who is also the color commentator for NBCs broadcasts of Notre Dame games. I think Jacksonville at (pick No.) 7 starts his interest. I dont think he gets past 16 with the Jets, and I think there are some teams hanging down there like Chicago at 19 that would love to have Michael Floyd.
Floyd said he isnt worrying about when he would be drafted, but he does plan to be in New York for the first round.
I just want to be picked, Floyd said. This is a goal of mine, a dream since I was in third grade, to play in the NFL.
Floyd and Jonas Gray were joined by safety Harrison Smith, cornerbacks Robert Blanton and Gary Gray, linebacker Darius Fleming, offensive linemen Taylor Dever and Trevor Robinson and kicker David Ruffer at the Pro Day.
Jonas Gray is returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He participated in passing drills and completed 22 bench-press reps, but he didnt run the 40 as he continues to recover from surgery.
I felt awesome, Jonas Gray said. Teams have been giving me some good grades. A lot of teams have said anywhere from third to fifth round, and thats awesome. Im just looking forward to getting back healthy and working hard.
Mayock said Smith continues to impress with his athleticism and that Blanton and Fleming did the most to improve their draft prospects.
Somebodys going to get a steal with Harrison Smith, Mayock said. I think the two guys that really helped themselves as far as measurements were Blanton and Darius Fleming. Both ran in the mid-4.5s.
