Downtown fire heavily damages home

The Fort Wayne Fire Department responded to a house fire north of downtown late Friday night that caused heavy damage.

No one was home at the time of the blaze and the only injury was a cut a firefighter received on his finger, according to a news release.

Fire crews responded to the house, in the 500 block of Catherine Avenue, shortly before 9 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the structure. The fire, which the department described as “hidden” in the exterior walls, extended from the first floor to the second floor.

The blaze, which is under investigation, was brought under control within 25 minutes, according to the statement.
