A police officer was injured when he lost control of his vehicle while responding to call in DeKalb County Friday evening.
Deputy Brady Thomas was responding to assist Butler police officers on a call about a residential alarm about 7:50 p.m. and his travel was blocked by a train at County Road 61 near Steel Dynamics, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Thomas turned around and was driving south on County Road 61, and was approaching the intersection of Indiana 8 and County Road 59, when he began to slow his response, the statement said.
He was unable to slow his vehicle down enough to make a left turn and skidded through the intersection. Thomas’ vehicle went into the ditch and hit a large culvert, the statement said.
Three people in the area – Storm Evans, Codi Mumma and Deeanda Holtzberg – saw the vehicle in the ditch and helped Thomas out, police said.
The vehicle then caught fire.
Thomas suffered a broken right ankle and had bruised ribs. His 2010 Chevy Impala was a total loss, the statement said.
