Teacher honor roll

Terah Brogan

Brogan

School: Lakeside Middle School for 23 years, now Blackhawk Middle School for 1 year

Grade/subject teaching: Sixth-grade math for 23 years now; sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade physical education

Education: Snider High School; bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Indiana University, Bloomington; master’s of education from IPFW

Years teaching: 24

City born: Denver

City raised: Fort Wayne

Current hometown: Fort Wayne

Family: My children all have fur (2 dogs and 5 cats).

Favorite teacher: There are so many; my parents, Mrs. Lunsey (PE), Mr. Fast (math), Mr. Kilmer (math)

Favorite class in school: Math, yearbook, physical education

Favorite teaching memory: There are so many, I would probably have to say watching kids who struggle have their “Oh, I can do this” light bulb go on. I have fond memories of taking students to High Hope camp. I loved doing “Project Life” with my kids. I loved doing skits at an assembly with my fellow teachers.

What is the hardest thing about being a teacher? All of the external pressure! So much paperwork that has nothing to do with teaching the kids. Teaching is hard enough without everything being our fault!

When did you know you wanted to be a teacher? My parents were both teachers, so teaching is in my DNA. I knew I wanted to be a teacher early on and spent a lot of time playing school as a kid.

Nominated by: Shania Pernell

Reason for nomination: “Mrs. Brogan helped me in so many ways. She helped me understand math better. She prepared me to do well on the ISTEP+! She pushed me to always do my best. Mrs. Brogan also influenced me to get involved in athletics and other school activities. She was always there if I needed her. She’s not only a great teacher but a mentor, coach, and friend who I will always remember!”
