The Indiana Department of Transportation on Monday announced that Union Chapel Road will close Wednesday between Auburn and Diebold roads to prepare for construction of the Interstate 69 interchange.
Widening work began last month on the interstate, and when that is complete the state will be able to shift traffic on I-69 to replace the existing Union Chapel bridge and construct the interchange ramps.
There will be 20-minute traffic stoppages on the interstate that will be controlled by state police. Interstate lanes will be restricted from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday during the widening and demolition work.
The official detour for Union Chapel Road uses Auburn Road and Indiana 1-Dupont Road. This closure will continue throughout the construction season, INDOT said.
All work is weather permitting.
INDOT said the interchange is expected to open late this fall, except the northbound on-ramp to I-69 from Union Chapel.
The closure was originally scheduled to begin today.
