Greater regional balance on All-Northeast Indiana Team

The SAC has a strong tradition, especially recently, of producing quality girls and boys basketball players.

Well, the rest of the area seems to be catching up – at least for one year.

The makeup of the 2012 All-Northeast Indiana girls and boys teams, sponsored by SportONE Ortho Northeast and announced Sunday, is not as dominated by the SAC as in past years.

The All-Northeast Indiana teams, along with the All-SAC teams and Gooden Award winner, will be honored at 7:15 tonight at IPFW’s Rhinehart Hall at a program sponsored by SportONE and The Journal Gazette.

Among the 20 players – 10 girls and 10 boys – are seven from the SAC.

Half of the girls All-Northeast Indiana team came from the SAC in Bishop Luers’ Brooke Ridley and Miracle Woods, along with conference rivals Akilah Sims of Snider, Ariana Simmons of South Side and Courtney Smith of Concordia.

Canterbury’s Bailey Farley and Kindell Fincher, Homestead’s Emily Bley, Leo’s Keanna Gary and Norwell’s Jessica Rupright, the 2012 Indiana Miss Basketball, make up the rest of the girls squad.

Concordia (Class 3A) and Canterbury (Class A) each won state titles, while Bishop Luers (2A) was the state runner-up.

South Side and Snider also collected postseason titles for the SAC by winning girls sectional titles.

Fremont, Norwell and Southern Wells also won girls sectionals.

The boys All-Northeast Indiana team has only two players from the SAC: Northrop’s Bryson Scott (a Purdue recruit) and Bishop Luers’ James Blackmon Jr. (an Indiana recruit).

Notre Dame recruit V.J. Beachem used to play in the SAC at Harding but moved over to New Haven in the NHC after Harding closed last spring.

Norwell’s Kyle Fillman and Josh VanMeter, Adams Central’s Maverick Baumer, Bluffton’s Keith Cochran, Whitko’s Logan Irwin, Homestead’s Zach Terrell and Canterbury’s Trent Van Horn make up the rest of the boys squad.

Norwell was the 3A state runner-up, while Canterbury advanced to the Class A semistate.

Bishop Dwenger and Northrop collected boys sectional titles for the SAC.

Homestead and Adams Central also won boys sectional championships.
