RAPID CITY, S.D. -- The Komets advanced to the Turner Conference finals with a 4-3 overtime victory Tuesday night at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
Pretty funny stuff as it relates to the game-winning goal: No one admits to scoring it.
While video replay seems to show Colin Chaulk swatting in a pass from Mike Vaskivuo, he claims that Rush defenseman Michael Couch was the one who put it in.
"Their defenseman poked it in," Chaulk said. "I didn't get a piece of it, though I would have liked to have. But at this time of year, it's not about goals or personal achievements. It's about winning four games in each round and I think guys understand the feeling now of how hard that is, how difficult that is, to do."
Vaskivuo, of course, was released by the Rush and picked up by the Komets on March 15. Since then, he has five goals and 17 points in 12 games, not including the goal that gave the Komets a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven Turner Conference semifinals.
"They gave me room on the blue line and I took it. I just tried to put the puck on net," Vaskivuo said.
"I'm still shocked. This is unbelievable. These guys took me in from Day 1 and really supported me this whole time. It's just a good feeling."
