Group home worker hurt in blaze

A caregiver at a group home was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation Monday after a mulch fire spread to the side of the home and set it ablaze.

Fort Wayne firefighters responded to 1414 Inwood Drive, an Easter Seals Arc group home, at 4:30 p.m. and found the exterior siding and an interior room on fire, according to a statement.

The fire was under control in 24 minutes and also had spread to the attic, the report said.

There were 10 occupants in the home who were evacuated by the caregiver, who suffered minor smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital.

An occupant of the home said she looked outside, saw the mulch was on fire, and tried to put it out, but the wind quickly spread the fire.

There was moderate damage from the fire and water and heavy smoke damage, the report said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
