Officer in Eden Green shooting is ID’d

The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Gang Unit assisted in executing a federal warrant Monday evening with the U.S. Marshal Service at Eden Green apartments.

On Wednesday morning, the Fort Wayne Police Department identified the officer who fatally shot Marcus Hayden as the suspect, carrying a gun, attempted to escape after shooting a federal agent, according to a written statement issued by a police spokeswoman, Liza Thomas.

Fort Wayne Police Officer Derrick Demorest was guarding the exterior perimeter about 11:30 p.m. when Hayden, carrying a handgun, got out of a rear window. Police said Demorest shot Hayden after he refused to listen to verbal commands.

Hayden died several hours later at a local hospital.

Demorest has been with the Fort Wayne Police Department and is currently on paid administrative leave, which is usual for this kind of case.

The name of the U.S. marshal who was injured has not been released. He was seriously injured, but officials say his wounds were not life-threatening.
