City buys 20 more downtown planters

Indoor golf over Groundhog Day will mean a little more beauty downtown this year. Mayor Tom Henry on Wednesday announced the $16,000 raised at this year’s Groundhog Open golf event allowed the city to purchase 20 more planters, bringing the downtown total to 100. Sponsors are needed to help maintain the planters. Those interested can contact the Downtown Improvement District at 420-3266.

Lakeside Pond lowering delayed

The lowering of the water level at Lakeside Pond, scheduled to begin Wednesday, has been postponed until the Maumee River rises to a level that is high enough to refill the pond. The city plans to lower the pond 2 to 3 feet to take soil borings and determine the condition of the pond’s clay liner.

Fire captain now a battalion chief

The Fort Wayne Fire Department promoted Capt. Christopher Fitch to battalion chief Wednesday. A 20-year veteran of the department, Fitch has served as a captain in the combat division and also as a member of the dive team.
