IPFW grad seeks Congress seat

The 1992 Miss Indiana from Shipshewana is competing in another pageant this year -- and this time, she's vying for votes with guys.

Shelli Yoder is the only woman among five candidates for the Democratic nomination in Indiana's 9th Congressional District. The winner of the May 8 primary election will face first-term Republican Rep. Todd Young in the November general election.

Yoder, a 1991 graduate of IPFW, was the second runner-up for Miss America. Today, she is the associate director of professional development for Indiana University's Kelley School of Business in Bloomington.

Judging from media reports and blogs, Yoder's main rivals for the Democratic nomination are retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Jonathan George, who lives near Bedford and was a member of President Obama's National Security Council, and Robert Winningham of Charlestown, a former economic developer in Texas and an aide in the 1990s to then-Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-9th.

Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan has endorsed Yoder.
