Police have arrested Fort Wayne woman who fled after she allegedly struck and killed a man with her minivan downtown early Sunday morning.
Fort Wayne police were called to the 1100 block of Broadway, near the Brass Rail at West Jefferson Boulevard, in reference to a critical injury crash involving a pedestrian, according to a statement.
Officers said the man was unconscious and unresponsive and immediately gave medical aid until paramedics arrived. Emergency responders deemed the man was in critical condition and took him to a local hospital, where he later died, the statement said.
Police said the man was standing in the road or attempting to cross it when he was hit by what witnesses said was a light colored minivan that was driving north in the 1100 block of Broadway. The minivan did not stop after hitting the man and witnesses told police the vehicle had damage to the front passenger side.
Minutes after the crash, police made a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Huffman Street and Franklin Avenue, which is about 1 1/2 miles away and that matched minivan's description and had damage to the front passenger side, the statement said.
Anissa M. Northrup, 33, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangerment and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, police said.
The name of the man who was killed was not released by police and will be released by the Allen County Coroner's Office.
Broadway Street was closed for nearly two hours while the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigated the crash, the statement said.
The crash remains under investigation by Fort Wayne police, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office and the coroner's office.
