Accused drunk driver hits, kills pedestrian

An accused drunken driver who struck and killed a pedestrian in downtown Fort Wayne early Sunday was caught minutes after police say she fled the scene.

The crash happened about 2:45 a.m. in the 1100 block of Broadway near West Jefferson Boulevard. Anissa M. Northrup, 33, a city resident, was driving north in a minivan when she hit a man who was standing in the street or trying to cross it, police said.

The man was unconscious and unresponsive when police officers arrived. They aided him until paramedics showed up. Critically injured, the man was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

The victim's identity was released on Monday afternoon.

Witnesses reported seeing the minivan strike the man. They told police the vehicle was light-colored and had damage to the front passenger side.

After the crash, the driver did not stop and kept going north on Broadway, police said.

Minutes later, a police officer pulled over a minivan matching the description in the area of Huffman Street and Franklin Avenue, about 1 1/2 miles north of the crash scene.

The driver of the minivan, Northrup, was arrested on a felony charge of leaving the scene of a fatal crash and two misdemeanor counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

She was being held Sunday evening at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $10,750 bail.

Broadway was closed to traffic for nearly two hours while police processed the crash scene.

The case remains under investigation.
