8 ballplayers injured in Ohio car-bus crash

Fourteen people – including eight baseball players from Ohio and a Fort Wayne family – were hospitalized Tuesday after a crash involving a bus and a van.

The crash occurred on Ohio 49 at Ohio 111. It involved a school bus from Hicksville Exempted Schools that was carrying a baseball team to an afternoon game, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. The other vehicle was a 2005 Toyota Sienna with Fort Wayne residents.

The family left Fort Wayne and were taking three children who are members of Blackhawk Christian School’s track team to a meet in Antwerp, Ohio, according to Blackhawk Christian athletic director Steve Wild.

Eight students from the bus and five passengers from the Sienna were transported to Paulding County Hospital with injuries that were not considered serious, police said.

Blackhawk lead administrator Bill Hartman said the three students were released from the hospital.

The driver of the Sienna was flown by helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, and police did not know her condition.

No other information was provided, and the crash is under investigation.

“Our prayers are going out not only to our family from Blackhawk but to the baseball team from Hicksville,” Wild said.
