6 years for mail check thefts

A man linked to the thefts of checks from mailboxes was sentenced Wednesday in Allen Superior Court to six years in prison.

Stephen L. Reed, 25, pleaded guilty last month to corrupt business influence. He was charged, along with Christ Tsetse, in the theft ring. The pair were accused of stealing checks and then giving them to others to cash.

As part of the sentence, Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull ordered Reed to repay restitution to a number of area banks – $5,082 to PNC Bank, $1,700 to Tower Bank, and $1,500 to Three Rivers Federal Credit Union, according to court documents.

In March, Tsetse was sentenced to six years in prison for his role in the scheme.
