Wawasee girls basketball coach Kem Zolman would see Pat Summitt this past season and noticed something very different.
It is such a sad situation to go out, Zolman said of Summitt stepping down as the leader of the womens program at Tennessee. Watching her on the sidelines, you could just see it wasnt the same Pat Summitt weve known. It wasnt that she wasnt in it; it was a lack of confidence. That was difficult to see. You hate for her to go out this way.
She is a legend. She paved the way for womens sports; it wasnt just about basketball.
Zolman is the father of Shanna Zolman, the 2002 Indiana Miss Basketball who played for four seasons with the Volunteers under Summitt. Kem Zolman still remembers when he first met Summitt when Shanna was going through the early stages of the recruiting process.
She was everything that I heard about, he said. You werent surprised at all. She was Bob Knight without the four-letter words. Coach Knight was a very intimidating four-letter-using fellow that built shields around himself. She never had shields around her.
She had a way of easing any tension that there might be. Once we understand each other, I wasnt going to be a normal parent, and we had more of a coach-coach relationship. She would come over in the middle of practice and talk basketball. Theres never been a scar. You can hunt around as much as you want. We went through that (recruiting) process, and theres never been more of a straight lady when it comes to that stuff. They follow the book.
