Irish offense takes lead into break

Notre Dame's offense took a 31-29 lead into halftime of the Blue-Gold game thanks to a pair of touchdowns in the last 2:09.

Gunner Kiel still hasn't played in the scrimmage, and Everett Golson was the top performing quarterback in the first half.

Golson completed 11 of 15 passes for 120 yards with two touchdowns. He has also run for 25 yards.

Andrew Hendrix is 4 for 9 for 51 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for 13 yards on two carries.

Tommy Rees is 7 for 14 for 84 yards with an interception.

George Atkinson III is leading the rushing attack with 115 yards on 12 carries, but he did lose two fumbles.

Cornerback Lo Wood has a team-high six tackles after the first half, and linebacker Ishaq Williams and safety Matthias Farley each have an interception.

Rees was able to get the offense down to the 13 on his drive that started in the first quarter, but he was unable to punch it in for a touchdown.

Rees converted a fourth-and-4 from the 38 with a 6-yard pass to Theo Riddick, but in the red zone, Rees couldn't get passes in for scores to Daniel Smith or DaVaris Daniels.

Hendrix moved the offense to the defense's 20 on the next series, but the drive stopped when George Atkinson III fumbled and the ball was receovered by Anthony Rabasa, giving the defense a 19-10 lead.

Atkinson redeemed himself on the next series with a big 30-yard run to set up a Golson 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ben Koyack. Atkinson shrugged off linebacker Ishaq Williams behind the line of scrimmage then made two more defenders missed before being taken down at the 10.

Koyack's touchdown cut the defense's lead to 19-17 with 6:46 left in the first half.

Mistakes then cost the offense again after a touchdown.

Atkinson couldn't hang onto a pitch from Rees and the fumble was recovered Ben Councell for a 22-17 lead for the defense.

Hendrix threw a pass right at Williams, which the linebacker easily picked off to end the next offensive series and give the defense a 29-17 lead with4:00left in the first half.

Golson got the offense back into the end zone on the next drive, finding Theo Riddick from 19 yards out for a touchdown. Golson's second TD pass of the game cut the defense's lead to 29-24 with2:09left in the first half.

The offense took a 31-29 lead with 27 seconds to go as Cierre Wood bounced out to the left to score on an 8-yard run.
