Motorcyclist critical after DeKalb crash

A motorcyclist trying to outrun police was in critical condition after wrecking the bike Saturday night in DeKalb County, according to the sheriff’s department.

A police officer in Ashley tried to stop Daniel A. McMahon for a traffic violation. But McMahon, 37, of Auburn, did not pull over and led police on a high-speed chase.

The pursuit ended six miles south of town about 7:15 p.m. when he drove off the north side of County Road 20 and up an embankment, west of County Road 23, the sheriff’s department said.

The motorcycle went nearly 160 feet before it crashed in a field. Afterward, McMahon left the scene and was walking west when an officer caught him.

McMahon, who was not wearing a helmet during the crash, was taken to Parkview Regional Medical Center. At last check, he was unresponsive and suffering an internal head injury, the sheriff’s department said.

Criminal charges against him are pending.
