White House: Obama's Republican opponent now clear

The Associated Press

The White House says President Barack Obama's Republican challenger is now clear.

White House press secretary Jay Carney says that the long Republican presidential contest appears to be over. He was acknowledging the obvious after Mitt Romney's primary sweep Tuesday night that gave him a lock on the GOP nomination.

Carney offered no comment on Romney, but said "there seems to be a general acknowledgment that the process has moved to that stage," at least "informally." Romney will formally accept the mantle of GOP presidential nominee at a party convention this summer.

Speaking to reporters traveling with Obama to Iowa, Carney says he does not think Obama watched televised primary results from Pennsylvania, New York or other states on Tuesday night.
