Chandler Harnish, the 2007 Norwell graduate who went on to set numerous offensive records at Northern Illinois, was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts as the last selection of the 2012 NFL draft. With it, he won the title of “Mr. Irrelevent.”
As the 253rd overall player and last to be drafted, Harnish gets the annual “Mr. Irrelevent” honor. With it, he will also receive numerous prizes from the NFL.
With 3,216 passing yards and 29 touchdown throws, he was last season’s MAC Offensive Player of the Year. He was fourth in the country among seniors in total offensive yards with 4,595. He had six 100-yard rushing games and three 300-yard passing games. And he wrapped up his record-setting career by being named the MVP of the GoDaddy.com Bowl with 274 passing yards and two touchdowns.
Harnish, who led Norwell to the 2006 Class 3A championship game, set 30 offensive records as the quarterback at Northern Illinois.
He was the second quarterback taken by the Colts, who chose Stanford’s Andrew Luck with the draft’s No. 1 pick.
